Zsanett Péter

I was born in Zenta, in a small town in Vojvodina, the province of the former Yugoslavia, that is mostly inhabited by Hungarians. My parents and I moved to Szeged, Hungary when I was 5 year old to finally reside in the country that we ethnically belong to. The rest of the family stayed in Serbia, however this distance brought an incredible sense of unity into our family that provided me a very strong and supportive background.

In my early childhood I became fond of several arts. Through my father’s inspiration I started taking piano lessons over 12 years ago and since then I have been devoted to playing this instrument. I also started dancing at the age of six and competed for many years.

As I grew older I realized my intense curiosity toward the complexity of science. Therefore, I started balancing my time between activities that link with my professional interests as well as my personal ones. I have joined the Biology, Chemistry and Geography Clubs that have enabled me to widen the breadth of my scientific knowledge and realize that this is the field I am most interested in. At the same time I was dedicated to enhancing the overall environment of my school by joining Student Council as the representative of my class and the Volunteer Department as a tutor of English language.

The desire to discover new cultures has long since been a motivating force in my life. This is the reason why I applied for two international scholarship programs, both of which I won. I participated in a United Kingdom exchange program in 2008 and I had the chance to spend an academic year in the United States in 2011-2012. This year was of incredible significance to me. It helped mould me into an independent, open-minded and multicultural individual.

When I started my studies in the United States I was more than happy to take advantage of new opportunities by participating in Math Leagues, Conservation Club, Jazz Band, Pep Club, the tennis and the soccer junior varsity team. I was also able to get my feet wet in a professional health care setting, since I have always been attracted to medicine. I initiated a volunteer position at Aspirus Hostpital in Wausau, Wisconsin, where I worked closely with Certified Nursing Assistants in the Palliative Care Unit. I particularly chose this unit in order to learn how to handle the emotional demand that is involved when treating terminally ill patients. I personally believe this area of medicine requires the greatest inner strength and this is why I was eager to see what impact this demand has on me. For my service, leadership and academic excellence throughout this year I was awarded membership into the National Honor Society.

Upon returning to Hungary I was determined to refine the skills I gained while volunteering in the hospital, therefore I decided to undertake the care of an elderly patient in the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease. It further confirmed my devotion toward medicine, thus reconfirmed the academic path I should follow. I opted to study Biology, Chemistry and Latin at an advanced level. Part of my hard work bore fruit when I finished third at a national Latin language competition and received the Academic Excellence Award the 11th time through my studies.

Sewanee’s dedication to build a small, familiar community is one of the reasons why I believe Sewanee is the perfect place for me. I also find The Liberal Arts education fascinating since I am always eager to broaden my mind in many fields. The cultural exchange and the high diversity of students will also allow me to appease my thirst to assemble various viewpoints of society, while the excellent professional opportunities will provide me the best expertise and the most valuable experience.

Commencing my studies at Sewanee fills me with anticipation and excitement. With the exceptional opportunity the Klein Family Scholarship has to offer, I truly feel like the world has just opened up for me. I am beyond grateful and motivated to serve Sewanee's community to the best of my ability in the future and to be able to return all the kindness I was granted.
