Linda B. Klein

Linda B. Klein 1947 - 2004

Linda Klein devoted her early years to competitive roller figure skating, and she rose to become the U.S. national champion in the singles, ladies’ pairs, mixed pairs and dance categories. She and her partner placed sixth in dance and seventh in mixed pairs in the world championships in 1962. After retiring from skating, Ms. Klein’s interests focused for a number of years on the Spanish language, the work of the Cuban statesman and writer, José Martí, and Latin American literature. She studied at the University of Granada and earned B.A. and M.A. degrees from Queens College of the City University of New York. She then completed her doctoral studies at Columbia University, where she joined the faculty after receiving her Ph.D. degree. In 1976, Ms. Klein resolved to study law and entered Columbia University Law School. She served as Editor-in-Chief of the Columbia Journal of Transnational Law in 1978-1979 and received her LL.B. degree in 1979. She then joined the international law firm of Cleary, Gottlieb, Steen & Hamilton as an associate and began working with Mr. Gooch, who was to become her husband. They co-authored numerous books and articles, including Documentation for Derivatives, now in its fourth edition, and Documentation for Loans, Assignments and Participations, now in its third edition. At the time of her death, Ms. Klein was a partner in the international law firm now known as Dewey & LeBoeuf.
