Eszti Gyori

I am originally from Budapest. As the eldest of nine children, I would not have been able to call Sewanee my second home without the generous help of the Linda Klein Family Scholarship. I graduated cum laude with honors in May of 2012 with a degree in Global Relations. During my time at Sewanee, I was a member of the Order of Gownsmen, the academic honor society of the University. I enjoyed being on the highly competitive varsity Equestrian Team and getting involved in the life of the wider community as the Community Service Chair of my sorority, Gamma Tau Upsilon. I also served first as the president, then vice president of the Sewanee Chapter of Basic Needs, a nonprofit organization founded by a Sewanee alumnus that is devoted to supporting impoverished Bangladeshi children by providing them with education, health care, food and shelter. Even though I have had some serious medical issues since the summer of 2010, I truly cherished every day spent on the mountain.

During my time at Sewanee I developed an interest in identity and ethnic politics, which I might be interested to further study in the future. My senior thesis on the case of Hungarians in Transylvania was published in a history journal. Since graduation I married my husband, Mark Landerholm and we are currently volunteering for a year with World Gospel Mission in Hungary. My husband and I serve with a Christian horse ministry targeting underprivileged youth and children where I am the director of riding and international relations coordinator. Additionally, I also work as a translator and interpreter.
